Cine mashrabiya

The Cine lattice project explores the difference between mashrabiya or Arab lattices and Western windows. In the West the idea of Renaissance perspective is linked to the window, which directs the gaze outwards. In the East, the mashrabiya or lattices domesticate the gaze through light and direct it inward.

Paying attention to the history of the gaze in the East and the West, we find two symbolic forms that administer the gaze differently. In the West the idea of Renaissance perspective is linked to the window, which directs the gaze outwards. In the East, the mashrabiya or lattices domesticate the gaze through light and direct it inward.

In both cultures, the outside and the inside are found in a different relationship that occurs between the gaze, the landscape and the light. However, today it seems that we all look for the world not on the other side of the window, or within the space of the lattice, but on the screens that are placed in front of our eyes, in which the photographic image and the video are the most consumed.

Candeo builds wooden “lattice chambers” with the traditional design of eight-pointed stars, from which he records the landscape of the city of Córdoba, establishing a paradox between the outside and the inside, the gaze and the light. The installation combines these symbolic forms through audiovisuals.
